More is more sometimes, at least in the world of small appliances. KitchenAid has introduced a new member of the stand mixer family, known as the Artisan mixer. It has a tilting head, like the KSM90, but it has a larger 5 qt. capacity bowl. It also gives you more oomph, as in 325 watts of cookie dough busting power. What's not to love? If you've been considering a stand mixer, this may be the perfect "starter model" for you.

KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged.

Thermal Pots Versus Slow Cookers

!±8± Thermal Pots Versus Slow Cookers

You've seen these two products on the market. You've known their function, what they are used for in the kitchen. You've seen many different brands out there as well. You are confused if these two kitchen-must-haves have any difference at all.

This article is to tell you, they have no difference at all in terms of functionality but they do have a difference in terms of technology. Both of the kitchen wares do keep your soup or stew warm for long periods of time but one uses electricity while the other one does not. We shall make some simple comparison (without sounding like a science lesson here) between the two of them. Let's start with the slow cooker first.

The slow cooker uses electricity with a thermostat attached at the bottom of the pot to keep the soup/stew warm throughout the day or any long periods of time. Since it's a thermostat, of course you can adjust the desired temperature to be kept at. The inner pot is using the "conventional Chinese method" of retaining warmness that is, using some stone material such as ceramic or porcelain. Electricity is supplied to the thermostat and it produces heat constantly to the temperature that is set and this heat is constantly "transferred" into stone inner pot from the bottom. Heat convection takes place within the inner pot. Since the inner pot is made of thick stone material, heat loss still takes place but at a slower rate.

If you notice the inner walls of the outer pot of the slow cooker, you can see it is glossy silverfish surface. This further slows down the rate of heat loss using the laws of radiation. As for the top of the inner pot, the lid is usually made of thick glass material to prevent heat loss as well.

This is how the slow cookers works and remember the fact that it uses electricity to achieve heat retention.

Now let's move on to thermal pots. To put it simply, it makes use of the same heat transfer theory as what you have known or learnt from vacuum flasks in physics during school or anywhere. It uses the laws of heat convection, conduction and radiation to help aid in heat retention.

Heat conduction and convection is reduced greatly (but not totally as this is not possible) by means of vacuum. Vacuum is a better insulation compared to foam. Now at the sides or walls of the thermal pot, there is an outer wall and inner wall. In between these walls is the vacuum. With the presence of vacuum (okay okay, I promise no science lessons here but just good to know that vacuum contains close to zero number of atoms), heat conduction and convection is greatly slowed down.

Infrared radiation is reduced by means of the silvering linings (like a mirror) on the sides or walls of the outer pot. In addition, the double lids (the inner pot lid and the outer pot lid) and the insulation support at the bottom of the thermal pot helps reduce the process of heat loss. With the combination of vacuum and silver linings, it greatly reduces heat transfer by convection, conduction ands radiation.

If a vacuum flask can retain temperatures of both hot and cold for long periods of time under the same heat transfer theory, a thermal pot can do so too.

Now that we know how thermal pots work, we proceed to compare how different they are to slow cookers.

Electricity: the slow cooker uses it while the thermal pot does not and therefore it saves money.

Safety: the slow cooker needs to be turned on for as long as you want you soup/stew to be warm. The thermal (inner) pot needs only 10-15 minutes on the gas stove before placing into the outer pot for it to self-cook. Both scenarios are assuming that you are out at work and not at home to look after the soup/stew.

Versatile: the slow cooker needs a power point all the time for it to operate and hence not convenient to bring out for picnics or any outdoor activities. The thermal pot, since it can self-cook the moment it leaves the gas stove, can be brought to almost anywhere for up to 8 hours.

Multi-function: the slow cooker can only deal with warm-hot purposes. The thermal pot can deal with both hot and cold (such as using it as an ice-box or keeping cold drinks) purposes.

Cooking ability: the slow cooker have a higher chance of "overcooking" when compared to the thermal pot. Since the thermal pot is a much slow cooking (and "natural") method, foods such as vegetables and meat will be retain in terms of colour and tenderness. Soups in thermal pots have been reported to remain clear after being left "alone" after a day of work. This is based on actual experiences from real users of the thermal pot who have switched over from slow cookers.

Convenience: the slow cooker has to be set to the right temperature in order for it to slow cook the soup/stew properly. The thermal pot does not need temperature adjustments as all you have to do is to leave the inner pot on the gas stove for 10-15 minutes and place it back into the outer pot.

This article thoroughly understands how both types of pots work and the science behind it. With these understandings, it becomes clear that the thermal pot stands out as the most convenient and money-saving option to cook up a nice warm soup/stew with tender meat and well-coloured vegetables within, after a hard day's work.

Homemade Focaccia Bread

This is a simple recipe for Focaccia Bread ~ Italian Flat Bread. It goes great with Stews, Soups and Spaghetti Sauce. I do use a Kitchen Aid Mixer but it can be made by hand,, but will take longer. Focaccia Bread Dough ~ Makes 2 2 c. water Splash of Olive Oil Heat to 120* In Kitchen Aid mixer bowl put ( Use dough hook): (I first mix with a spatula) 2 C. Flour 1/4C. Sugar 1 tsp. Salt 2 ½ tsp Yeast Add the water/Olive Oil, turn mixer on low: mix well,, scrapping bowl a few times. Slowly add more flour to make a ball that forms around the dough hook. Use just enough flour to make a dough that is not to sticky.. I don't measure the flour because depending on the weather =some days you will use more and other days less. Using 4-1/2-5-1/2 cups of flour total. Knead the dough in the mixer for 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl.. Turn the dough to grease all sides. Cover, and rise in a warm place until doubled. About 1 ½ hours. Punch down.. Place on a floured cloth, knead a few minutes. Cut dough in half. Cover and rest 20 minutes. Either roll the dough with a rolling pin or use your hands to stretch the dough out onto 2 greased pizza pans. Let the dough rest for 10- 15 minutes. Take your fingers and poke into the dough to make indentations. Brush lightly with Olive Oil. I use different spices depending on what meal I am making: For my soup;; I sprinkled: Italian seasoning garlic powder onion power parsley Parmesan cheese Basically use any spice to go with your meal. LCD Screens Transforming Digital Signage and Advertising in Restaurants and Retail Stores

!±8± LCD Screens Transforming Digital Signage and Advertising in Restaurants and Retail Stores

It is not hard to understand why LCD displays screens are rapidly being adopted by retail stores and restaurants. InfoTrends conducted a digital signage study where they polled consumers and found that "digital signage displays have a 47.7% effectiveness on brand awareness, increase the average purchase amount by 29.5%, create a 31.8% upswing in overall sales volumes, generate a 32.8% growth in repeat buyers and generate 32.8% more in-store traffic".

LCD display screens are being used by restaurants for displaying the menu and entertainment, by garment and clothing retail stores to show videos of fashion shows and to showcase various products, and by automobile dealers as video walls to provide the feel of the car on the road and to keep the customer occupied as they wait for sales agent or other people.

LCD Display Usage in Restaurants: When visiting KFC Hyderabad (India), what grabs your attention is not so much the smell of food but the vibrant colours of the four 42-inch LCD display panels which serves as the overhead menu board. KFC Hyderabad sought the help of Sharp Business Systems India to set up the digital signage solution. LCD digital menus can be maintained from a remote central location or a local PC set up in the store. The benefit of remote central management is that menu, promotions, video, pricing and other items displayed on the LCD displays in the retail outlet can be managed from one central location to provide consistency and to make sure that the changes are made consistently across all stores at the same time. Consumers receive dynamic previews of the offering with potential for positive impact on sales. If restaurants have the networked point-of-sale cash registers collecting time based purchased data, marketing can get instantaneous feedback on how different promotions and pricing are having impact on sales.

Restaurants are also using LCD displays as televisions to spruce up the restaurant atmosphere. It is now a common expectation to have LCD TVs in restaurants that show the local sports or the news.

LCD Display Usage in Showrooms: Whether it is women clothing store, automobile showroom, convenient store or a department store, LCD displays are appearing in all these locations. A typical store has up to four LCD displays per site. InfoTrends study showed that business that had installed displays in their showroom, predominantly expected the display usage in their showrooms to increase. To grab and hold consumer attention, retailers are using LCD displays in a video-wall format or in a daisy chain format along with stand alone units. The content could be a mixture of video along with text or a combination. The goal is to target specific customers with specific information and this information may change with the time of the day - creating a retail company-owned, closed-circuit television network that runs nothing but the retail company programming.

Why do Retail Businesses Select LCD Displays vs. Plasma Displays?
There are a number of reasons why retailers and restaurants are selecting LCD display over plasma displays.

· Fan-less Architecture of LCDs: LCD displays do not have a fan potentially resulting in less noise and distraction. This is less of an issue with newer higher end plasma displays, however it is worthwhile to keep track as you evaluate the two options.

· Rugged Design of LCDs: LCD displays are closed-box units and more rugged. There is less chance of oil fumes, dust or other elements getting into the unit and reducing the life of the unit.

· Resolution and Picture Quality: (A) Video resolution on LCD displays and plasma display are comparable but computer data is better observed on LCD displays. (B) LCDs are better to view in ambient light or in brightly lit rooms. As businesses usually work during the day in ambient light, LCDs are more desirable for most business applications. (C) Plasma manufacturers have made much of their viewing angles. However with new LCDs the view angles are 176°. There is not much difference between the two technologies in viewing angle. (D) There have been concerns with burn-in for Plasma screens especially for static images. However, many Plasma manufacturers have improved their anti-burn in technology. There are no burn-in issues with LCD screens.

· Life of the Display Unit: LCDs can be operated 24x7 for 50,000+ hours equivalent to 5+ years of continuous viewing. Plasma, on the other hand, typically has a half life of 30,000 hours. At half life, the phosphors in a plasma screen will glow half as brightly as they did when the set was new. There is no way to replace these gases; the display simply continues to become dimmer with use. An LCD TV will last as long as its backlight - and in many models the backlight bulbs can be easily replaced!

· Power Consumption: Plasma TVs use more power than LCD - twice as much

Technology for both plasma and LCD display continues to change. Be sure to check updates to the technology for apple to apple comparison.
